The Association Française d’Études Chinoises 法國漢學協會 (French Association of Chinese Studies) was established in 1980 with the goal of bringing together students, professors and researchers interested in Chinese studies of all periods. The AFEC website keeps members informed of the Association’s activities as well as academic events related to sinology.
The academic journal Études Chinoises
Since 1982, AFEC has published annually the academic journal Études Chinoises 漢學研究. Études Chinoises is the only multi-disciplinary French-language academic journal dedicated to Chinese studies. It contains articles, bibliographical articles, research notes and book reviews. Études Chinoises also publishes a certain number of articles and reviews in English.
As of October 2012, Études chinoises is ranked in the AERES (Evaluation Agency for Research and Higher education) evaluation, in the History section.
The AFEC “Young Scholars” Study Days
One of AFEC’s goals is to support young researchers’ work. Every two years they are invited to present their research during the Journées des jeunes chercheurs (Young scholars’ workshops). The most outstanding papers are offered the opportunity to be published in Études Chinoises.
AFEC also sponsors Journées d’études (colloquia and conferences), which examine important sinological issues. Please see the page Study days for additional information.
AFEC Phd prize
Moreover, the annual AFEC PhD prize (Prix de thèse de l’AFEC) rewards the two best doctoral dissertations defended in France in the fields of classical and contemporary Chinese studies. The prize is presented at the annual General Meeting of the Association. Please see the Doctoral thesis prize page for additional information.
