Conférence de Alison HARDIE : ”The Authentic, the Exotic, and the Marginal in the Literary Work of Ruan Dacheng 阮大鋮 (1587-1646)”
Ruan Dacheng was a notorious politician of the Ming-Qing transition, but also a brilliant poet and dramatist. Questions of personal identity and authenticity – a focus of late-Ming philosophy – form a major aspect of his literary work. This reflects his own sense of being misunderstood, while an interest in the exotic and in characters marginal to mainstream society also reflects his own sense of being marginalised from official life. Dr Hardie’s seminar will address these issues and offer an opportunity to read and discuss passages from Ruan’s poetry and plays.
