Duties
Research
The focus on research will be on contemporary China, preferably on the link between economics, society and culture (e.g. economic developments and social changes, cross-cultural management, organisational behaviour in China). This includes the supervision of bachelor papers, master’s theses and Ph.D. students in these fields.
The candidate is expected to develop a research programme, to attract research projects, to promote national and international research collaborations, and to present outstanding scientific results at an international level.
Education
Chinese Studies is an area study: in addition to teaching the Chinese language and the various aspects of Chinese history and culture, there is a minor in economics and a sociocultural minor. The teaching responsibilities include a substantial part of the teaching activities in the field of contemporary China, with a special attention to the economic aspects.
The teaching assignment comprises a set of courses, which in any case includes:
– Introduction to Contemporary China (F0TA5A; 4 ECTS)
– Domestic and Foreign Politics of China (F0TC0A; 4 ECTS)
– Capita Selecta of Sinology (partly) (F0YN6B, F0YN8B; 4 ECTS)
– Economic development of China (D0M10A; 4 ECTS)
– Master Seminar Contemporary China (F0YO0A; 6 ECTS)
– Corporate Culture and Cross-Cultural Management in Chinese Context (F0YO8A; 6 ECTS)
– Reading Seminar I (partly) (F0YO2A; 6 ECTS)
– Reading Seminar II (partly) (F0UV8A; 6 ECTS)
Other teaching activities are:
– Supervision of bachelor’s papers and master’s theses, including the corresponding support activities
– Internship Chinese Studies (F0BB2A; 6 ECTS)
– Participation in the doctoral seminars
Teaching is expected to meet the KU Leuven standards in terms of the academic level, programme, and orientation. It has to be in keeping with the educational vision of the KU Leuven. Commitment to quality of education as a whole is expected.
Service
The candidate is expected to actively participate in discussions about contemporary China within and beyond the university. The candidate should be willing to contribute general service and to participate in administrative and management tasks.
Profile
The candidate is expected to have a Ph.D. degree in Chinese Studies, or in an equivalent relevant domain with specialisation in China and acquaintance with Chinese Studies. An excellent command of Mandarin is required.
The candidate should be able to provide excellent teaching, so as to contribute to the quality of the research group at the level of education. The study programme attaches great importance to the interaction between the language courses and content courses and expects active collaboration with the language teachers for the elaboration of courses on contemporary China. The candidate has good communication skills, a strong sense of responsibility, and the capacity to work in a team. Coaching skills for the guidance of students (e.g. during their stay abroad or internship) are an asset.
The candidate must be able to provide an excellent research record. The research quality should be reflected in international publications and participation in international research programmes and conferences. International research experience and fieldwork in China are an asset.
A good knowledge of Dutch and English is a prerequisite. The official administrative language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch (or do not speak it well) at the start of employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable you to take part in meetings. Before teaching courses in Dutch, you will be given the opportunity to learn Dutch to the required standard.

You will be appointed to the position of tenure track assistant professor for a period of 5 years; afterwards, subject to a positive evaluation, you will be appointed to the tenured position of associate professor.
KU Leuven is well-equipped to welcome foreign professors and their families and provides practical support with regard to immigration & administration, housing, childcare, learning Dutch, partner career coaching, etc.
To facilitate academic onboarding and accelerate research in the first phase, a starting grant of 110,000 euro is offered to new professors who cannot rely on substantial other funding and who are appointed for at least 50%.
